What sales negotiation is
Sales negotiation is the give-and-take near the end of a deal where price, contract terms, scope, and timelines are settled. The goal is an agreement both sides are willing to sign, ideally one that protects the seller's value and margin while meeting the buyer's real needs.
Strong negotiation starts long before the negotiation. The value a rep built throughout the sales cycle determines their leverage: a buyer who sees high value negotiates less aggressively on price.
Principles reps rely on
Common principles include knowing your walk-away and the buyer's alternatives, trading rather than conceding (never give a discount without getting something in return, such as a longer term or a case study), and protecting price by reinforcing value rather than caving to 'it's too expensive.'
Negotiation is closely tied to objection handling and leads directly into the close. Reps who negotiate well separate a genuine constraint from a tactic, and respond to each differently.
